Fortnite Tweaks: Best Settings for More FPS and Less Input Lag

The biggest Fortnite FPS gains come from the Performance rendering mode and a few in-game settings, then preparing Windows and your graphics driver for play. Here are the steps in order, with why each one matters and what to expect.

Settings inside Fortnite

  1. 01

    Rendering mode: Performance

The lightest rendering mode in the game. It raises FPS a lot on mid-range and older PCs, in exchange for simpler visuals. The game needs a restart.

Settings › Graphics › Rendering Mode › Performance

  2. 02

Frame-rate limit = your refresh rate or a little above

Set the limit to your monitor's refresh rate (144, for example) or slightly above, so FPS stays steady and the PC doesn't heat up for nothing.

Settings › Graphics › Frame Rate Limit

  3. 03

Turn on NVIDIA Reflex if available

It cuts the delay between your click and seeing it on screen. Choose “On + Boost” on NVIDIA cards.

Settings › Graphics › NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency

  4. 04

    Lower shadows and effects

Shadows, effects and post-processing are the heaviest settings and the least useful in competitive play. Keep view distance medium or higher so you spot enemies early.

  5. 05

    Exclusive fullscreen

Fullscreen gives the game higher priority and lower latency than windowed modes.

Settings › Video › Window Mode › Fullscreen

Prepare Windows and your graphics driver

  1. 06

    Game Mode

Gives the game priority over background tasks.

Settings › Gaming › Game Mode › On

  2. 07

    Performance power mode

Power-saving settings slow the CPU while you play, especially on laptops.

Settings › System › Power › Power mode › Best performance

  3. 08

    Update your graphics driver

New NVIDIA, AMD and Intel drivers often carry Fortnite-specific improvements.

  4. 09

    Close background apps

Browsers, recorders and sync apps take CPU and memory away from the game.

  5. 10

    The right refresh rate

Make sure Windows runs your monitor at its highest supported refresh rate, or you won't see the extra frames.

Settings › System › Display › Advanced display

Why Fortnite sometimes stutters

  • Shader compilation: the first matches after a game or driver update can stutter, then smooth out on their own.
  • Memory: 8 GB of RAM with a browser open means stutter; 16 GB is far more comfortable.
  • Heat: when the CPU or GPU runs hot it slows itself down, and FPS drops suddenly.
  • Storage: installing the game on an SSD cuts stutter when areas load.

Safely, with no ban risk

Everything above is an official game or Windows setting and has nothing to do with anti-cheat. Avoid any file that modifies Fortnite's files or injects into the game, and any “FPS pack” that asks you to switch off Windows Defender.

Questions gamers ask

Performance mode gives the highest FPS on most PCs. DirectX 12 looks better and can suit powerful cards, but it's heavier.
