Minecraft Tweaks: Boost FPS in Java and Bedrock

Minecraft leans on the CPU and render distance more than the graphics card, and Java and Bedrock have different settings. Here are the most useful steps for each edition, the biggest of them in Java being the Sodium mod.

Last updated: October 2026

Minecraft Java

  1. 01

Render Distance between 8 and 12

The setting with the biggest performance impact. Each step up multiplies what the PC draws.

    Options › Video Settings

  2. 02

    Lower Simulation Distance

It sets how far mobs move and crops grow. Lowering it relieves the CPU.

  3. 03

    Graphics: Fast

And turn off Clouds and Entity Shadows, and lower Biome Blend.

  4. 04

    Max Framerate and VSync

Set Max Framerate near your refresh rate, and turn off VSync for the lowest latency.

  5. 05

    The Sodium mod

A free, open-source mod that rewrites rendering and raises FPS a lot on most PCs. It installs through Fabric; download it only from its official Modrinth page.

Minecraft Bedrock (Windows edition)

  1. 06

    Lower Render Distance

Start at 10 to 12 chunks and raise it if FPS stays steady.

    Settings › Video

  2. 07

Fancy Graphics and Beautiful Skies: off

And turn off Smooth Lighting on a weak PC.

  3. 08

    VSync: off

For the lowest latency, with an FPS cap from your graphics driver if needed.

Memory in Java: don't overdo it

Allocating huge amounts of RAM to Minecraft Java doesn't raise FPS and can cause periodic stutter. 4 to 6 GB is enough for normal play, a bit more only for heavy modpacks.

Mods and safety

Minecraft doesn't run anti-cheat on your PC, and mods are fine in single-player. Download them only from official sources (Modrinth or CurseForge), and follow the rules of the servers you play on.

Questions gamers ask

Yes, it's open source and very well known. Just download it from its official page, not random links.
